Techniques For Establishing Good Reading Skills

By Cynthia Morgan

In order to grasp concepts thoroughly, learners always have to go through hours of studying. While many people find learning in educational institutions appropriate, others have no qualms about home study. Nevertheless, the fact is that there are several people who experience difficulties concentrating when studying. Concentration is important especially for those preparing to take exams. Luckily, those looking for ways to enhance their levels of comprehension when studying need to look no further as there are plenty of reading techniques they can use to assist them in their efforts.

The truth is, very few people find studying interesting possibly due to the toll it takes on the brain. Every individual is unique in his own way. While one learner may have an easy time grasping difficult concepts, a different individual may have to put in some extra effort. These days, some academic institutions actually offer coaching sessions to those thinking of improving their skills in studying. Most people are aware of the steps necessary for successful studying but fail to observe them.

One of the first things that all great readers do before picking up their books to read is set goals. Basically, goals are important in all areas of life. By setting them beforehand, readers can get to know what they need to do and the amount of time they have. In other words, goal setting creates a sense of purpose. It also inspires readers to come up with realistic objectives.

For maximum effectiveness, learners should start by limiting themselves to a few chapters each day. This way, they can improve their content coverage as they get better. Goals also help improve speed. Like in all other areas in life, time is of the essence. As such, there is nothing more gratifying than the feeling of achieving set objectives in time.

Another important technique that can help people enhance their skills involves knowing how to select the best materials. Similar topics can always be delivered by authors in different ways. Without a doubt, authors have unique writing styles. As such, those aspiring to be good readers should strive to identify the writing styles that they find easy to understand.

Before selecting a publication, one should be absolutely sure it contains relevant information. One can easily ascertain relevance by taking a quick look at the references section of the book, the author and the date it was published. Books written by some authors are more popular than those written by others for various reasons, chief among them quality. The synopsis of a book also tells a lot about its content.

There are plenty of studying styles that exist. The most important thing here is preference. Commonly used styles include scanning, skimming and intensive studying. The first two styles are closely intertwined.

While scanning involves looking at texts quickly to find phrases that are relevant to the area of study, skimming involves studying fast to understand the general meaning of topics. In the latter, all readers have to do is identify and jot down main points. Intensive studying typically involves thorough note taking and summary making. Basically, readers should try and identify the styles that suit them best.
